Bankrupt Haimark Cancels Cuba Cruises

14 February 2016

A cruise industry newcomer has canceled the first of a series of cruises between Miami and Cuba, according to Travel Weekly. Haimark Line has dropped the 10-night sailing to Havana and six other ports in Cuba, scheduled to kick off February 29, as the bankruptcy of the company stretches into a 4th month.

This is the latest cancellation at the small-ship line. Haimark has not operated sailings since October 2015. The company filed for bankruptcy on October 30 under Chapter 11 section of U.S. Bankruptcy Code and immediately started canceling cruises scheduled for its one ship, 210-passenger Saint Laurent.

Last summer, only weeks after its May 30 debut, ms Saint Laurent crashed into a lock while navigating St. Lawrence Seaway. The ship was out of service for a month, 4 cruises were canceled. An October 30 13-night Bahamas cruise from Portland, Maine was also canceled, with the company blaming poor weather. November and December sailings were canceled in the wake of bankruptcy.

In a statement in November, the line blamed the St.Lawrence Seaway incident for the bankruptcy, citing insurance issues which remain unresolved. Haimark charters ms Saint Laurent from its owner, Clipper Cruises.

In July 2015 the company announced that Saint Laurent would operate voyages to Cuba from Miami starting this month, and becoming the first vessel to do so in decades. The bankruptcy does not affect the Haimark Ltd. affiliated company, which operates river cruises in Asia.
