Sun Princess Cancels Scheduled Visits Due to Technical Issue

25 April 2016

Just a few days after emerging from her April 2016 refurbishment, Sun Princess made changes to a couple of itineraries due to technical issues. The ship will skip today’s scheduled call at Kuala Lumpur (Port Kelang), Malaysia. Instead, the Princess Cruises ship will spend the day at sea.

Passengers onboard Sun Princess received a letter in their cabins announcing the itinerary change.

“We are currently experiencing a technical issue with one of the generators. While this in no way affects the safety of our guests and crew, it does restrict our ability to operate at full speed.”
As compensation, each guest has received AU$100 refundable onboard credit. The line will also refund pre-paid Kuala Lumpur shore excursions bought from the cruise line.

The next cruise of Sun Princess - the May 1 departure of 17-night Northern Australia Explorer - is expected to cancel a port of call in Queensland. Princess Cruises provided the following advice to booked passengers:

"Please be advised that Sun Princess has experienced technical difficulties that have resulted in our inability to operate at full speed. Our technical experts have determined that we will be unable to visit Yorkeys Knob on Wednesday, May 11, 2016. Instead, Sun Princess will now spend the day at sea. As a goodwill gesture, each guest will receive a refundable credit of $100 AUD applied to their onboard account. We apologize for any disappointment this change may cause and look forward to welcoming you on board Sun Princess."
Sun Princess was launched in 1995 and underwent a US$30 million refit from April 5-18, 2016. The 14-day dry dock in Singapore added the new Princess Luxury Bed to cabins and Curtis Stone's Share restaurant. Kai Sushi was transformed into Kai Seafood Bar. Other additions include Amuleto Café, NZ Natural ice cream outlet and Legends sports bar, showing tennis, weekly AFL and NRL football matches on LED screens.
