Shell Announced as LNG Provider for AIDAprima

22 April 2016

AIDA Cruises signed an agreement with Shell as LNG provider of its new flagship, AIDAprima.

The strategic cooperation was signed in Rotterdam on Tuesday (April 19) during the maiden call of AIDAprima to the city. Shell will become the exclusive provider of LNG for port engine operations in all AIDA Cruises' ports of call. AIDAperla, sistership to AIDAprima under cosntruction at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, will also be supplied with LNG by Shell.

On Thursday, the Japanese-built flagship AIDAprima arrived at her future base port, Hamburg, for the first time. The ship will be christened on May 7 during Hafengeburtstag festivities.

Felix Eichhorn, AIDA Cruises' president, said the operator believed that LNG was the cleanest fossil fuel. In Rotterdam Eichhorn commented:

'With the supply of LNG to AIDAprima during her port calls we are sending a clear sign in favour of environmental and climate protection.
AIDAprima is equipped with dual fuel engine able to operate with LNG while the vessel is docked in port. The required LNG fuel will be supplied by truck. The other engines of the ship will be shut off in port, leaving required energy to be exclusively generated from LNG with reduction of NOX emissions by 80%. By about a fifth, CO2 emissions are cut.

According to AIDA Cruises, preparations for new LNG fuel supply arrangement are underway in Le Havre, Rotterdam, Southampton, Zeebrugge and Hamburg. First LNG test runs start next week.
